Superior weather resistance

Valtti Opaque has been developed for wooden facades to withstand the extreme conditions of Finland. The surface is flexible and adjusts to the substrate and seasons. Forms a water-resistant paint finish that allows water vapor to permeate.

The surface texture of wood remains attractively visible

Semi-matt Valtti Opaque produces a finish that the eye does not tire of. The essential feel of wood can be felt on both board and timber surfaces. Valtti Opaque is an excellent maintenance paint

Gloss grade
Smooth wood: 8-10 m2/l per coat.  Sawn wood: 4-6 m2/l per coat.  Wet-film thickness approximately 100-250µm per coat, dry-film approximately 40-100µm per coat.  Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and moisture content of the substrate.
Can sizes
0.9 l, 2.7 l, 9 l and 18 l
Application method
Brush or spray.  Polyester and nylon paint brushes are best suited for the application of Valtti Opaque.
For airless spray: use a 0.018” – 0.023” spray tip.

If necessary thin by up to 10% with water.

Drying time at 23°C and 50% relative air humidity
Normally touch-dry in one hour and recoatable after 2 hours. Low temperatures and high humidity will make drying times longer.

Protect from frost.

Application conditions
All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air at least +5 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80%.
Surfaces must be clean, dry, and free from grease, dirt, oil, wax, rust, all loose material and surface contamination. Remove all loose material from previously painted surface with a steel brush. Wash moldy surfaces with Homeenpoisto Mould Removal solution according to instructions. Treat rusting metal parts like nail heads with Rostex Super Metal Primer. Ensure that existing glossy, gloss painted and filled surfaces are thoroughly flatted down. Ensure that all surfaces are thoroughly prepared prior to priming and painting. Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings.

Note: Discoloration of paint especially noticeable within light colours may occur over knots and resinous areas present in the wood as a result of temperature and humidity fluctuations. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc., which contain oil and water-soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings and discolour the finished surface.
Prime new bare wood overall at the earliest possible stage of construction and spot prime all bare areas on previously painted wood with Valtti Pohjuste or Valtti Akvabase Priming Oil.

Note: A priming coat of Valtti Pohjuste or Valtti Akvabase should be applied to all exterior wood which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved preservative. Apply liberally on end-grain.
Stir the paint thoroughly before use. Usually Valtti Opaque is used unthinned, if necessary thin with water. Apply two coats with brush or spray on new surfaces and one or two coats in maintenance painting depending on the colour difference of the substrate and the condition of the surfaces to be treated. When treating impregnated wood with light colours, apply two or three coats. Reserve enough paint mixed in one container for a uniform surface to avoid possible colour differences. Apply liberally on end-grain.
Cleaning of tools
Clean with water immediately after use.
Maintenance instructions
After painting the surfaces must be handled with care, because the paint will achieve its final hardness and durability after 4 weeks under normal conditions. Soon after treatment the surfaces can be cleansed lightly with soft brush, damp cleaning cloth or mop.
Earliest one month after painting dirty surfaces can be cleaned with Tikkurila Huoltopesu (1 part Huoltopesu, 10 parts water). Clean stains and very dirty surfaces with a stronger solution of Huoltopesu (1:1). After washing rinse surfaces and allow to dry.
Maintenance treatment
Valtti Opaque can be repainted with Valtti Opaque. One coat is sufficient, if same colour is used.

Check the condition of the timber and the functionality of the log structure before applying the finishing coat. See more information at:

Product consumption, when surface is...

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
