Is absorbed into wood

Valtti Akvacolor is a waterborne, natural oil-based, wood finish that is easily absorbed into the wood. It is suitable for exterior board and timber surfaces. It protects the wood from weathering by slowing the impacts of humidity and sunlight.

Wide range of applications

Valtti Akvacolor is suitable for both new and previously stained surfaces. In addition to log surfaces, it can also be used to treat thermally modified and impregnated wooden terrace grids, columns, etc.

Being natural oil-based and waterborne, Valtti Akvacolor is pleasant to use without compromising its protective qualities. Valtti Akvacolor is easy and pleasant to brush on, and tools can be cleaned with just soap and water.

Colour Range
Tinting according to Tikkurila Valtti or Super Colors colour card.
Always use a tinted product. The final colour can be seen after the surface has dried.
Gloss grade
Smooth wood: 8-12 m2/litre per coat.  Sawn wood: 4-8 m2/litre per coat.  Actual spreading rates will depend upon many factors including texture, porosity and moisture content of the substrate.
Can sizes
0.9 l, 2.7 l, 9 l and 18 l
Application method
Brush or spray.
Drying time at 23°C and 50% relative air humidity
Touch-dry after 2-3 hours and recoatable after 24 hours.  Low temperature and high humidity will make drying times longer. Avoid mechanical stress for the first few days until the surface reaches its final hardness.
Solids volume
Approx. 22% depending upon the colour.
Approx. 1.0 kg/l, ISO 2811.
Protect from frost. Poorly closed or half empty can does not withstand long-term storage.
Use the content of opened can during the same painting season as the product characteristics may vary in half-empty cans.

Application conditions
All surfaces to be painted must be dry, the moisture content of the wood below 20%, the temperature of the air, surface and wood finish at least +5°C , and the relative humidity of the air below 80% during painting and drying. The working properties are at their best at a calm, cloudy dry weather day with temperature +10 - + 20°C.
Untreated surfaces:
Clean surfaces from dirt, dust and loose material with steel or scrubbing brush. Wash moldy surfaces with Tikkurila Homeenpoisto Mould Removal or Tehopesu Super Clean according to instructions. Prime surfaces at the earliest possible stage of construction with Valtti Pohjuste or Valtti Plus Base. Protect plants from splashes of priming oil.

Surfaces previously treated with semi-transparent product:
Remove loose material and wood turned grey with a scraper and/or steel brush. Clean the surface and wash with Homeenpoisto Mould Removal or Tehopesu Super Clean, if necessary. Prime bare wood surfaces with Valtti Pohjuste or Valtti Plus Base. If a clear possibly gloss film remains on the wood surface, remove it or at least sand carefully.

Make sure that timber cladding, weatherboarding and timber glazing beads, etc. are adequately fastened with non-corrosive fixings. Valtti Akvacolor is not recommended for use with linseed oil putty. Good quality non-setting glazing compounds which form a protective skin should be used in accordance with manufacturers instructions. Particular attention with regards to preparation should be given to wood such as Oak, Teak, Cedar, Douglas Fir, Mahogany and Idigbo, etc. which contain oil and water soluble tannin which may impair the drying, hardening or adhesion of surface coatings.
In as early construction stage as possible a priming coat of Valtti Pohjuste or Valtti Plus Base should be applied to all exterior wood, which has not been pre-treated or vacuum impregnated with an approved wood preservative. Apply liberally on end grain.
Reserve enough tinted Valtti Akvacolor for one uniform surface, mixed in one can, to avoid possible colour differences. Stir thoroughly before and during use. Apply Valtti Akvacolor evenly and continuosly along the length of a log or few boards to avoid overlapping. Apply liberally on the end grain. Apply two coats, on sawn and log surfaces thin coats. Always use a tinted product for the treatment of a new surface. Check the condition of the treated surface and make maintenance treatment when necessary. The maintenance interval is affected by the location, point of compass and weather conditions. Check the condition of the timber and the functionality of the log structure before applying the finishing coat. See more information at:
Cleaning of tools
Clean with water and soap immediately after use. Rinse with water. Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner) is recommended for removal of hardeded finish.

Valtti wood finishes and wood oils colour card

Wooden surfaces are exposed to unrelenting weathering from sunshine and humidity. Semi-transparent wood finishes protect wood surfaces against the weather, retarding the adverse effects of moisture and UV-light, without covering up the beautiful wood grain.

Treatment for surface
Number of coats
Product consumption, when surface is...

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
