Create a shimmering surface over paint

The translucent glaze is applied as an effect over painted wall surfaces. To obtain the most harmonious outcome, choose a primer colour as close as possible to the colour of the glaze. The Taika colour card provides recommendations for primer colours.

Power from light

Delicate colours and a light-reflective wall surface fit together. The playful combination of pearlescent and matt surfaces creates fun results. Experiment with stenciled patterns or draw a large, projected image on top of the glaze.

A silver sheen or the richness of gold?

Available in a wide range of colours from the Taika pearl glaze range, the Taika system is a simple solution for achieving unique finishes on interior surfaces.

Application conditions
The surface to be painted must be dry, the temperature of the air and the surface at least +10 °C, and the relative humidity of the air 30 - 70 %.
Unpainted surfaces:
Remove dirt and dust from unpainted surfaces. Smooth the surface with suitable Presto or Spakkeli filler, if necessary, and sand the dried surface. Remove sanding dust.

Previously painted surfaces:
Wash down previously painted surfaces with diluted Maalipesu cleaning agent, rinse carefully with water and allow to dry. Remove loose paint. Sand hard and glossy paint surfaces to matt. Remove sanding dust. Fill holes and cracks with suitable Spakkeli or Presto filler and sand the dry surface. Remove sanding dust.
Prime with a Tikkurila acrylate wall paint such as Harmony/Feelings Interior Paint. Apply two coats. Use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces and aim for as thin a roller pattern as possible. Since Taika Pearl Glaze will highlight rather than cover up surface defects, such as filled cracks and holes, the primed surface must be as smooth and even as possible. Because Taika Pearl Glaze is transparent, the colour of the primer will have a critical effect on the final look. Recommended basecoat colours for Taika Pearl Glaze can be found from the Taika colour card.
Painting a large continuous wall surface: Stir Taika Pearl Glaze thoroughly before applying. Use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces, applying the glaze generously in bands of about one metre at a time. Then use the roller to roll out with long upward strokes for as smooth a finish as possible. Aim for as thin a roller pattern as possible and try to apply the glaze evenly throughout. Use masking tape to cover the borders and remove the tape immediately after painting. Apply two coats for a more impressive, perfect finish. Note that while effect painting with Taika Pearl Glaze is easy, even for novices, skill and experience are required to paint smooth, large, even surfaces. Effect painting: Paint a small area (approx. 1 m²) at a time. Firstly, use a short-pile roller designed for smooth surfaces, applying the paint generously. Immediately after, use various design effect rollers, a brush or sponge to make patterns. First practice effect painting on a thick piece of cardboard or some other base. Taika Pearl Glaze is also ideal for stencil painting. See Tikkurila’s painting brochures for more ideas and more detailed instructions.
Cleaning of tools
Remove excess glaze from tools and clean thoroughly with water and soap. The use of Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool Cleaner) is recommended for cleaning hardened glaze.
Maintenance instructions
Taika Pearl Glaze reaches its final durability in approx. 1 month. Avoid cleansing during that time.
Clean surface with a neutral (pH 6-8) dishwashing agent using a soft cleaning towel. Rinse and dry immediately after treatment.
Maintenance treatment
According to instructions of "Previously painted surfaces". If wanted, you can cover the effect surface by painting with a water-borne wall paint.

Product consumption, when surface is...

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
