Panssarimaali

Quick drying semi-gloss alkyd anti-corrosive single pack coating for steel, cladding and roofing

Alkyd semi-gloss paint for use on cladding and sheet metal. Panssari offers superb weather resistance, colour stability and an extremely durable finish which protects against attack from chemical and biological erosion. Panssari contains active anti-corrosive pigments and can be applied as a primer finish to bare and rusted surfaces.

Examples of use:

New or previously painted interior and exterior cladding and roof sheets, steel, UPVC, gutters drain pipes. Panssari can be applied directly onto surfaces previously painted with alkyd or acrylic paints and industrially coated steel sheets (PVC, PURAL, POLYESTER, PVDF, Plastisol).

Excellent anti corrosive properties with great adhesion to steel, aluminium and galvanized surfaces

The gloss fades beautifully over time

Panssarimaali is a well-known traditional sheet metal roof paint. Together with the anti-corrosion Rostex Super primer, it forms a durable paint coat that fades beautifully over time.

Solvent-borne painting method

The “Panssarimaali method” includes the Rostex Super anti-corrosion primer and Panssarimaali topcoat. This traditional combination of solvent-borne paints is durable and highly resistant to the stress caused by possible zinc salts.

Wide range of colour options designed for sheet metal roofings

Panssarimaali can be tinted according to Tikkurila’s Sheet Metal Roof Paints colour card. Also available in most of the Wooden Facades colour card colours. Standard colors: Black (0202), Old Copper (0296), Iron Red (0384), Grass (0357).

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application conditions
The surface to be painted must be dry, the temperature of the air at least +5 °C, and the relative humidity of the air below 80 % during painting and drying.

Please note: The temperature of the surface may not exceed +40oC, otherwise the solvent will evaporate too quickly. This may cause e.g. porosity, bubbling and weakened adhesion. Plan the painting so that the paint film has enough time to dry before the evening dew. Dew dims the paint surface.

Preparation
Unpainted surfaces:
New zinc-coated sheet metal surfaces are recommended to be painted at the earliest on the following year. Best adhesion is achieved to already faded, mechanically or chemically roughened zinc-coated surface.
Remove possible white rusty/rusty parts with a scraper and steel brush (to St2 degree). Remove water soluble white rust protective agent, dirt, water soluble salts, greases and oils from the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent and brush. Rinse carefully with water and allow to dry well. Roughen the aluminium surfaces before painting.
Prime the entire surface with Rostex Super Metal Primer. Finish with 1 to 2 coats of Panssarimaali depending on the coverage. Single coat is normally sufficient, if the dry film thickness of Panssarimaali is 40-60 µm. Rostex Super can be top-coated with Panssarimaali after couple of hours. Painting should be done latest after 4 days from priming. Otherwise the primed surface has to roughened matt, rinsed carefully and allowed to dry before painting.

Previously painted surfaces:
Remove loose paint and possible rust with a scraper and steel brush (to St2 degree). If the flaking is heavy, it means that the adhesion of the old paint is thoroughly bad. In this case the old paint has to be removed carefully (e.g. with a scraper, steel brush, high pressure washing or pressure washing with addition of sand). Clean the surface with Panssaripesu Roof Cleaning Agent using a brush, rinse carefully with water and allow to dry. Prime bare metal areas with Rostex Super Metal Primer. Finish with 1 to 2 coats of Panssarimaali.
Painting
Stir Panssarimaali carefully before use and thin with White Spirit 1050 (0-5%), if necessary. Apply Panssarimaali preferably by brush, or alternatively by roller or spray. After rolling finish with a brush. The recommended dry-film thickness for a single coat is 40-60 µm (micrometer). Reserve enough paint for one uniform surface, and stir into one canister to avoid possible colour differences. Note! Do not use the colour made from C-base side by side with a correspondent standard colour. The slipperiness of the surface can be reduced by adding Non-slip (anti-skid material) powder into the paint (1/3 l into 10 l of paint). Apply two coats of paint when using Non-slip, so that the second coat includes the anti-skid material. The slipperiness of the surface can be reduced by adding Non-slip (anti-skid material) powder into the paint (150 g/10 ltr). Apply two coats of paint when using Non-slip, so that the second coat includes the anti-skid material.
Cleaning of tools
Clean tools with White Spirit 1050 or with Tikkurila Pensselipesu (Tool cleaner)
Maintenance instructions
Handle the surface with care, ultimate durability and hardness is reached in approx. a moth under normal circumstances. If cleansing is needed, use a soft brush, a mop or a damp cleaning cloth.
After 1 month the surface can be cleansed with Huoltopesu (mixing ratio: 1 part of Huoltopesu to 10 parts of water).
Clean soiled surfaces and stains with Huoltopesu (1:1). Rinse the surface carefully after maintenance and let it get dry.
Maintenance treatment
Panssarimaali can be repainted with Panssarimaali or other alkyd-based paint meant for metal roofs. Panssarimaali can also be repainted with Panssari Akva.

Instructions

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
