Kilpi Roof Tile Paint

A roof that your neighbors will envy

Tile roofs are among the most common roof types in Ireland. Even tile roofs require care and maintenance, however. Painting a tile roof refreshes the appearance of the roof and protects the worn surface of tiles. Tikkurila’s waterborne Kilpi Tiilikattomaali (Roof Tile Paint) is designed and optimized especially for the maintenance painting of roof tiles.

Designed for tile roofs

Waterborne Kilpi Tiilikattomaali (Roof Tile Paint) is designed and optimized especially for the maintenance painting of roofs, taking into consideration the harsh weather conditions that roofing is exposed to.

Extend the life of your tile roof

Kilpi Tiilikattomaali retards the penetration of water into the structure, thus reducing the erosion of the roofing as well as the formation of growth on its surface.

Excellent colour retention

The standard Kilpi Tiilikattomaali colours – tile red, cottage red, brown, dark gray, and black – are the most popular roof tile colours in Finland. They are tinted with inorganic pigments, which ensures the excellent colour retention of the paint.

APPLICATION DETAILS
Application conditions
The surface to be painted must be solid and dry, air temperature at least +5°C and relative humidity of the air below 80 %. Schedule the painting work so that paint film will be dry before the evening dew. Do not paint under the risk of rain.
Preparation
Check the condition and performance of the roof before starting the work. Reserve enough paint of the same batch to avoid eventual slight variation of shade. The profile of the roof increases the area to be treated. The product is not suitable for clay tile roofing. If you need to replace old roof tiles with new ones, make sure from the producer that the new material can be painted.

Clean the surfaces from dirt, dust, moss and lichen. Use high pressure washer, avoiding damaging the substrate and structures. Wash concrete tile roofs with Tikkurila Homeenpoisto Mould Removal solution according to instructions.
Applicable national health and safety precautions must be followed in the treatment of substrates containing asbestos.
Priming
Mix the paint carefully before use. Apply the paint with a brush or spray.
In spray application the priming is finalized with a painting brush to ensure that the paint is penetrated into the pores of the substrate and that the adhesion is adequate.
Painting
Concrete tile roofing (2 x application): Apply two coats of Kilpi Roof Tile Paint. For the first coat the paint is thinned up to 10-20% with water according to the porosity of the substrate. Apply one finishing coat at the earliest the following day after priming. In finishing the paint can be thinned 5-15% with water, if necessary.
Cleaning of tools
Clean tools with water. Slightly hardened tools can be cleaned with Pensselipesu Tool Cleaner.
Maintenance instructions
The product contains film protecting agents, therefore rainwater flowing from the roof is not recommended to be used for watering plants or washing during the first year from painting.

Handle the painted surface with care. The surface achieves its final hardness and durability within approx. 4 weeks.

Earliest after 1 month of application the surface can be cleaned with Huoltopesu Maintenance Cleaner (mixing ratio 1 part of Maintenance Cleaner in 10 parts of water). Rinse surfaces carefully after cleaning and let dry.
Maintenance treatment
Surfaces painted with Kilpi Tiilikattomaali Roof Tile Paint can be maintenance painted with the same product.

Instructions

Consumption varies depending on the surface to be treated and its condition. Absorption is affected e.g. by the surface roughness, moisture content level of timber and porosity. For example, log surface that has been untreated for a long time takes a lot more wood finish than a new surface to be treated.

When calculating the consumption, note that the consumption for round logs is 1.5 times higher than normal. Please also note the corner joints in the surface area.

Rounding up

As the filling rate is usually 90% (space for tinting), it is good to round up the liter amounts and reserve enough of the product so that the work is not interrupted unnecessarily, and colour will be even.
